@article{fdi:010068606, title = {{C}enozoic lateritic weathering and erosion history of {P}eninsular {I}ndia from 40{A}r/39{A}r dating of supergene {K}-{M}n oxides}, author = {{B}onnet, {N}.{J}. and {B}eauvais, {A}nicet and {A}rnaud, {N}. and {C}hardon, {D}ominique and {J}ayananda, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ince {D}eccan {T}raps extrusion ~ 65 {M}a ago, thick weathering mantles have developed over {P}eninsular {I}ndia on both the western coastal lowland and adjacent eastern plateau separated by the {W}estern {G}hats {E}scarpment. {M}anganiferous lateritic profiles formed by supergene weathering of {L}ate {A}rchean manganiferous protores are exposed on paleolandsurface remnants on both sides of the escarpment. {P}etrological and geochemical characterizations of samples from those {M}n lateritic profiles allowed identifying cryptomelane ({K}-{M}n oxide) dated by 40{A}r/39{A}r geochronology. {T}he ages obtained document major weathering periods, ca. 53-50 {M}a, and ca. 37-23 {M}a in the highland, and ca. 47-45 {M}a, ca. 24-19 {M}a and discrete weathering pulses at ~ 9 {M}a and ~ 2.5 {M}a in the lowland. {O}ld ages of the highland (53-50 {M}a) and the lowland (47-45 {M}a) indicate synchronous lateritic weathering across the escarpment at a time the peninsula started to drift across the equatorial belt. {I}ntense weathering periods at ca. 53-45 and ca. 37-23 {M}a are interpreted to reflect the {E}arly {E}ocene climatic optimum and the onset of {A}sian monsoon regimes, respectively. {T}he ages further indicate that most of the dissection of the highland must have taken place after ~ 23 {M}a, whereas the lowland was weakly incised essentially after ~ 19 {M}a. {O}ur results also document divergent erosion and weathering histories of the lowland and the highland after the {E}ocene, suggesting installation of a dual climatic regime across the {W}estern {G}hats escarpment.}, keywords = {{INDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}hemical {G}eology}, volume = {446}, numero = {}, pages = {33--53}, ISSN = {0009-2541}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1016/j.chemgeo.2016.04.018}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068606}, }
