@article{fdi:010067676, title = {{I}nteractive cost of {P}lasmodium infection and insecticide resistance in the malaria vector {A}nopheles gambiae}, author = {{A}lout, {H}. and {D}abir{\'e}, {R}. {K}. and {D}jogb{\'e}nou, {L}. {S}. and {A}bate, {L}uc and {C}orbel, {V}incent and {C}handre, {F}abrice and {C}ohuet, {A}nna}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}nsecticide resistance raises concerns for the control of vector-borne diseases. {H}owever, its impact on parasite transmission could be diverse when considering the ecological interactions between vector and parasite. {T}hus we investigated the fitness cost associated with insecticide resistance and {P}lasmodium falciparum infection as well as their interactive cost on {A}nopheles gambiae survival and fecundity. {I}n absence of infection, we observed a cost on fecundity associated with insecticide resistance. {H}owever, survival was higher for mosquito bearing the kdr mutation and equal for those with the ace-1({R}) mutation compared to their insecticide susceptible counterparts. {I}nterestingly, {P}lasmodium infection reduced survival only in the insecticide resistant strains but not in the susceptible one and infection was associated with an increase in fecundity independently of the strain considered. {T}his study provides evidence for a survival cost associated with infection by {P}lasmodium parasite only in mosquito selected for insecticide resistance. {T}his suggests that the selection of insecticide resistance mutation may have disturbed the interaction between parasites and vectors, resulting in increased cost of infection. {C}onsidering the fitness cost as well as other ecological aspects of this natural mosquito-parasite combination is important to predict the epidemiological impact of insecticide resistance.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {6}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 29755 [11 ]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1038/srep29755}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067676}, }
