@article{fdi:010067266, title = {{C}omparative study of the 1982-1983 and 1997-1998 {E}l {N}ino events over different types of vegetation in {S}outh {A}merica}, author = {{D}essay, {N}adine and {L}aurent, {H}. and {M}achado, {L}.{A}.{T}. and {S}himbukuro, {Y}.{E}. and {B}atista, {G}.{T}. and {D}iedhiou, {A}rona and {R}onchail, {J}osyane}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his work presents results which help to understand the behaviour of the {N}ormalized {D}ifference {V}egetation {I}ndex ({NDVI}) anomalies over the {S}outh {A}merica continent during the two strongest {E}l {N}ino events of the last century (1982-1983 and 1997-1998). {T}he data used are parts of a long-term series ( {J}uly 1981 to {D}ecember 1999) of calibrated {NDVI} data derived from {N}ational {O}ceanic and {A}tmospheric {A}dministration {A}dvanced {V}ery {H}igh {R}esolution {R}adiometer ({NOAA} {AVHRR}) datasets. {S}pecial emphasis has been given to the analysis of the response of the major {B}razilian vegetation types. {T}his paper introduces an approach that enhances {NDVI} anomalies relative to the long-term climatology of the region. {W}e find a negative {NDVI} anomaly for most of the region during the 1982-1983 event, whereas for the 1997-1998 event positive {NDVI} anomalies were observed over most regions. {O}nly the '{N}ordeste' region showed a similar vegetation response for both events. {W}e identify three possible factors that may play a role in the different {NDVI} responses to the two {E}l {N}ino events. {F}irstly, poor intercalibration of sensors may account for some, but not all of the differences. {S}econdly the response of the vegetation may depend upon the climate conditions prior to the {E}l {N}ino events. {T}hirdly, the difference in the onset date and the duration of the mature phase of the two {E}l {N}ino events, associated with very different {A}tlantic surface temperatures are shown to have dynamical consequences which may impact upon the vegetation.}, keywords = {{BRESIL} ; {AMERIQUE} {LATINE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {R}emote {S}ensing}, volume = {25}, numero = {20}, pages = {4063--4077}, ISSN = {0262-6667}, year = {2004}, DOI = {10.1080/0143116031000101594}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010067266}, }
