@article{fdi:010066738, title = {{C}ontribution of ultrasonography to the diagnosis of internal bleeding in snakebite envenomation}, author = {{T}chaou, {B}. {A}. and de {T}ove, {K}. {M}. {S}. and de {T}ove, {Y}. {S}. {S}. and {D}jomga, {A}. {T}. {C}. and {A}guemon, {A}. {R}. and {M}assougbodji, {A}. and {C}hippaux, {J}ean-{P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {I}n {A}frica, snakebite envenomations are frequently complicated by life-threatening hemorrhagic syndromes. {T}he authors of the present study conducted a prospective analysis at the {U}niversity {H}ospital of {P}arakou (north of {B}enin) for seven months ({J}anuary 1 to {J}uly 31, 2014) to assess the contribution of ultrasonography to the diagnosis of internal bleedings and management of envenomation. {M}ethods: {A}n ultrasound examination was performed in all patients with clinical envenomation regardless of its severity. {T}he study involved 32 patients admitted to the {ICU} of the {U}niversity {H}ospital of {P}arakou. {R}esults: {T}he average age was 27 +/- 13.9 years. {T}he main signs of severity were: prolongation of clotting time (88 %), severe anemia (41 %), clinical hemorrhage (47 %), and shock (19 %). {T}he ultrasound imaging showed internal hemorrhage in 18 patients (56 %). {T}here were hematomas (22 %), hemoperitoneum (13 %) or a combination of both (22 %). {T}he occurrence of internal bleeding and hemoperitoneum were mainly related to the delay of hospital presentation (p = 0.007) and the existence of external bleeding (p = 0.04). {T}hirty patients (94 %) received antivenom. {C}ase fatality rate was 3.1 %. {C}onclusion: {U}ltrasonography may help in diagnosing internal bleeding, even in patients that did not show external hemorrhages, and evaluating its importance. {A}s a consequence, the management of snakebite victims may be significantly improved.}, keywords = {{E}nvenomation ; {U}ltrasound ; {I}nternal bleeding ; {H}emoperitoneum ; {H}ematoma ; {BENIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {V}enomous {A}nimals and {T}oxins {I}ncluding {T}ropical {D}iseases}, volume = {22}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 13 [7 p.]}, ISSN = {1678-9199}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1186/s40409-016-0063-x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066738}, }
