  abstract = {{T}he diversity of marine macrophytes of small islands in the {S}outh {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean region has been poorly documented and little or no information is available for the {I}les {E}parses (or {S}cattered {I}slands) in the {M}ozambique {C}hannel. {W}e present the first species checklist for the three largest islands of the {I}les {E}parses: {E}uropa, {J}uan de {N}ova and {G}lorioso. {O}verall, with a total of 321 marine macrophyte species recorded (incl. 56% {R}hodophyta, 27% {C}hlorophyta, 15% {P}haeophyceae and 2% {M}agnoliophyta; {E}uropa: 134 spp., {J}uan de {N}ova: 157 spp. and {G}lorioso: 170 spp.) these islands harbour 23.5% of the total species recorded for the {M}ozambique {C}hannel region. {W}e report 36 new records for the {M}ozambique {C}hannel including 29 undescribed new and cryptic species. {O}ur results highlight a decrease in species richness southward in the {C}hannel. {B}ecause of their longitudinal arrangement between the northern and the southern ends of the {C}hannel and their central position, {E}uropa, {J}uan de {N}ova and {G}lorioso {I}slands represent data points of particular biogeographical interest and could be critical 'stepping stones' for connectivity in the highly dynamic {M}ozambique {C}hannel region.},
