@article{fdi:010066247, title = {{C}olonization and molecular diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with the rhizosphere of cowpea ({V}igna unguiculata ({L}.) {W}alp.) in {B}enin ({W}est {A}frica) : an exploratory study}, author = {{J}ohnson, {J}. {M}. and {H}oungnandan, {P}. and {K}ane, {A}. and {C}hatagnier, {O}. and {S}anon, {K}. {B}. and {N}eyra, {M}arc and van {T}uinen, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}rbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis is an important plant root-fungal partnership/interaction that affects the growth response of crops. {W}e have investigated the molecular diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi ({AMF}) colonizing cowpea roots and the associated rhizosphere soil to test the hypothesis that community diversity in rhizosphere soil is similar to that in cowpea ({V}igna unguiculata) roots. {C}owpea plants were grown in farmers' fields located in seven agro-ecological zones of {B}enin, and soil and root samples were collected. {T}he molecular diversity of the {AMF} in these samples was assessed after amplification of the large ribosomal subunit of {DNA} extracted from the soil and the root samples. {A}t fruition, the frequency of mycorrhizal infection was unaffected by the agro-ecological zone, but there were significant differences in the intensity of {AMF} colonization among the zones. {M}ultiple regression analysis showed that the main factor affecting mycorrhizal frequency at flowering was available phosphorus. {P}hylogenetic analysis revealed 25 operational taxonomic units belonging to two fungal families ({G}lomeraceae and {G}igasporaceae). {T}he diversity of {AMF} colonizing roots of cowpea in {B}enin was high and fairly similar to that in the rhizosphere soil but with a prevalence of the {G}lomeraceae. {D}espite the absence of strict host specificity in mycorrhizal symbiosis, there was a preferential association between some {AMF} species and cowpea cultivar {IT}96{D}-610.}, keywords = {{AMF} diversity ; {A}rbuscular mycorrhizas ; {O}perational taxonomic unit ; {R}hizosphere ; {V}igna unguiculata ; {BENIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}nnals of {M}icrobiology}, volume = {66}, numero = {1}, pages = {207--221}, ISSN = {1590-4261}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s13213-015-1097-y}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010066247}, }
