@article{fdi:010065963, title = {{S}patial mismatch between marine protected areas and dugongs in {N}ew {C}aledonia}, author = {{C}leguer, {C}hristophe and {G}rech, {A}. and {G}arrigue, {C}laire and {M}arsh, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}arine protected areas ({MPA}s) are a powerful tool for conserving marine biodiversity when designed using ecological information and conservation goals and targets. {D}ugongs ({D}ugong dugon) were not an explicit target in the design of the network of {MPA}s in {N}ew {C}aledonia, despite being one of the region's {W}orld {H}eritage values. {O}ur study retrospectively assessed the capacity of the {N}ew {C}aledonia {MPA} network to protect dugongs from anthropogenic threats. {W}e developed a spatially explicit model of dugong distribution and relative density based on information collected from 10 years of aerial surveys. {W}e quantified the amount of overlap between areas supporting high densities of dugongs and {MPA}s. {W}e found that most of the important dugong habitats of {N}ew {C}aledonia had a low coverage of {MPA}s that provide high levels of restriction on anthropogenic activities. {W}e identified several important dugong habitats along the west and the north-east coast that were not covered by {MPA}s and should be a priority for future management. {T}he spatial mismatch between {MPA}s and dugongs was likely caused by weaknesses in the planning process, including the: (1) lack of explicit conservation goals and targets; (2) omission of spatial information on species' distribution; (3) mismatch of spatial scales; (4) cost considerations; and (5) incorrect application of the {IUCN} protected area categories. {W}e provide guidance on how these shortcomings can be avoided for marine species of conservation concern in {N}ew {C}aledonia and other regions.}, keywords = {{NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iological {C}onservation}, volume = {184}, numero = {}, pages = {154--162}, ISSN = {0006-3207}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1016/j.biocon.2015.01.007}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065963}, }
