@article{fdi:010065301, title = {{M}obile health and maternal care : a winning combination for healthcare in the developing world ?}, author = {{A}l {D}andah, {M}. and {D}esgr{\'e}es du {L}oû, {A}nnabel and {M}eadel, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}orldwide, concerted efforts are made to stimulate the use of information and communication technology ({ICT}) in health care. {F}rom online {P}ersonal {H}ealth {R}ecord ({PHR}), treatment and appointment reminders by {SMS}, to the e-mailing of confidential clinical data, healthcare systems are increasingly using technologies to provide better services with less financial and human resources. {A}mong {ICT}s for health, e{H}ealth - i.e. health on the {I}nternet - has been extensively studied whereas the use of mobile technologies for health called "mhealth" or mobile {H}ealth has been less documented so far. {I}n 2013, almost 6.8 billion people were mobile phone users, mobile-cellular penetration rates stand at 96% globally (89% in developing countries). {A}ccess to the {I}nternet, by comparison, is a reality for only 39% of the world population (77% of the developed world population is online). {D}uring the last three years, many health stakeholders and mobile technology providers have understood the high potential of m{H}ealth and launched more than 600 operational projects in developing countries. {I}n this article we are discussing this issue first by assessing the current state of knowledge on mobile health in developing countries, as well as the issues and challenges raised by mobile health. {W}e then focus our discussion on maternal health to discuss the potential applications of these new techniques in this specific field. {F}inally we suggest several avenues for further analysis on the implications of using mobile phones as a tool for women's health.}, keywords = {{M}obile health ; {MH}ealth ; {M}obile phone ; {M}aternal care ; {ICT} ; {D}eveloping countries ; {PAYS} {EN} {DEVELOPPEMENT}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ealth {P}olicy and {T}echnology}, volume = {4}, numero = {3}, pages = {225--231}, ISSN = {2211-8837}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1016/j.hlpt.2015.04.002}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065301}, }
