@article{fdi:010065238, title = {{E}vidence of threat to {E}uropean economy and biodiversity following the introduction of an alien pathogen on the fungal-animal boundary}, author = {{E}rcan, {D}. and {A}ndreou, {D}. and {S}ana, {S}. and Öntaş, {C}. and {B}aba, {E}. and {T}op, {N}. and {K}arakuş, {U}. and {T}arkan, {A}. {S}. and {G}ozlan, {R}odolphe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}ecent years have seen a global and rapid resurgence of fungal diseases with direct impact on biodiversity and local extinctions of amphibian, coral, or bat populations. {D}espite similar evidence of population extinction in {E}uropean fish populations and the associated risk of food aquaculture due to the emerging rosette agent {S}phaerothecum destruens, an emerging infectious eukaryotic intracellular pathogen on the fungal-animal boundary, our understanding of current threats remained limited. {L}ong-term monitoring of population decline for the 8-year post-introduction of the fungal pathogen was coupled with seasonal molecular analyses of the 18{S} r{DNA} and histological work of native fish species organs. {A} phylogenetic relationship between the existing {EU} and {US} strains using the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequences was also carried out. {H}ere, we provide evidence that this emerging parasite has now been introduced via {P}seudorasbora parva to sea bass farms, an industry that represents over 400 {M}€ annually in a {M}editerranean region that is already economically vulnerable. {W}e also provide for the first time evidence linking {S}. destruens to disease and severe declines in {I}nternational {U}nion for {C}onservation of {N}ature threatened {E}uropean endemic freshwater fishes (i.e. 80% to 90 % mortalities). {O}ur findings are thus of major economic and conservation importance.}, keywords = {{EUROPE} ; {MEDITERRANEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}merging {M}icrobes and {I}nfections}, volume = {4}, numero = {}, pages = {art. e52 [6 ]}, ISSN = {2222-1751}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1038/emi.2015.52}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010065238}, }
