@article{fdi:010064771, title = {{H}igh variability in dissolved iron concentrations in the vicinity of the {K}erguelen {I}slands ({S}outhern {O}cean)}, author = {{Q}ueroue, {F}. and {S}arthou, {G}. and {P}lanquette, {H}. {F}. and {B}ucciarelli, {E}va and {C}hever, {F}. and van der {M}erwe, {P}. and {L}annuzel, {D}. and {T}ownsend, {A}. {T}. and {C}heize, {M}. and {B}lain, {S}. and d'{O}vidio, {F}. and {B}owie, {A}. {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}issolved {F}e (d{F}e) concentrations were measured in the upper 1300 m of the water column in the vicinity of the {K}erguelen {I}slands as part of the second {K}erguelen {O}cean {P}lateau compared {S}tudy ({KEOPS}2). {C}oncentrations ranged from 0.06 nmol {L}-1 in offshore, {S}outhern {O}cean waters to 3.82 nmol {L}-1 within {H}illsborough {B}ay, on the north-eastern coast of the {K}erguelen {I}slands. {D}irect island runoff, glacial melting and resuspended sediments were identified as important inputs of d{F}e that could potentially fertilise the northern part of the plateau. {A} significant deep d{F}e enrichment was observed over the plateau with d{F}e concentrations increasing up to 1.30 nmol {L}-1 close to the seafloor, probably due to sediment resuspension and pore water release. {B}iological uptake was shown to induce a significant decrease in d{F}e concentrations between two visits (28 days apart) at a station above the plateau. {O}ur work also considered other processes and sources, such as lateral advection of enriched seawater, remineralisation processes, and the influence of the polar front ({PF}) as a vector for {F}e transport. {O}verall, heterogeneous sources of {F}e over and off the {K}erguelen {P}lateau, in addition to strong variability in {F}e supply by vertical or horizontal transport, may explain the high variability in d{F}e concentrations observed during this study.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {AUSTRAL} ; {KERGUELEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iogeosciences}, volume = {12}, numero = {12}, pages = {3869--3883}, ISSN = {1726-4170}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.5194/bg-12-3869-2015}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064771}, }
