@article{fdi:010064482, title = {{E}ffects of the colonial cyanobacterium {T}richodesmium spp. on bacterial activity}, author = {{R}enaud, {F}. and {P}ringault, {O}livier and {R}ochelle {N}ewall, {E}mma}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e measured rates of particulate and dissolved primary production ({DOC}p) as well as bacterial production ({BP}) in order to determine the effect of freshly produced photosynthates on heterotrophic bacteria. {D}uring a 1 mo study carried out on samples from the southwestern lagoon of {N}ew {C}aledonia, we observed 2 different phytoplanktonic communities. {T}he first was a mixed community, dominated by diatoms and with a low abundance of {T}richodesmium spp. (10% total phytoplankton cells) and the second community was dominated by {T}richodesmium spp. (up to 98% total phytoplankton cells). {C}hlorophyll a normalised total (particulate + dissolved) primary production rates were twice as high in the mixed community compared to the {T}richodesmium spp. dominated community. {T}he percentage of extracellular release ({PER}), calculated as the percentage of {DOC}p divided by total primary production ({TOC}p), reached 8% in the mixed community; in contrast, rates were much lower in the {T}richodesmium spp. community and remained close to 1%. {I}n terms of {BP}, activities were higher in the mixed community and were generally higher in light incubations than in the dark. {I}n contrast, in the {T}richodesmium spp. dominated community, bacterial activity was much lower and decreased with increasing {T}richodesmium spp. abundance. {T}his decrease in bacterial activity could not be explained by a decrease in bacterial abundance. {T}his suggests that the proportion of active bacteria was much lower during the {T}richodesmium spp. bloom.}, keywords = {dissolved primary production ; bacterial phytoplankton coupling ; bacterial production}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}quatic {M}icrobial {E}cology}, volume = {41}, numero = {3}, pages = {261--270}, ISSN = {0948-3055}, year = {2005}, DOI = {10.3354/ame041261}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064482}, }
