@article{fdi:010064190, title = {{D}istribution and biomass evaluation of drifting brown algae from {M}oorea lagoon ({F}rench {P}olynesia) for eco-friendly agricultural use}, author = {{Z}ubia, {M}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {P}ayri, {C}laude}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he proliferation of two native brown algae, {T}urbinaria ornata and {S}argassum pacificum, was observed on high islands of {F}rench {P}olynesia since the early 1980s. {H}igh swells frequently remove algae from their substratum, floating algae concentrate due to local currents in specific lagoon locations, and large compact rafts eventually form. {A} study of the prospective industrial use of drifting algae was conducted, including estimates of biomass, biomass renewal and agronomical trials. {H}arvesting rafts could efficiently limit the geographic expansion of proliferating populations and their associated nuisance. {T}he drifting biomass in rafts around {M}oorea {I}sland was estimated at 13,062 +/- 1,998 kg dry mass based on aerial photographs acquired on 31 {A}ugust 1997. {T}o measure the renewal rate and temporal variation of the raft biomass, we completely harvested one of the larger rafts in {F}ebruary 2002, which was quickly renewed within 10 days. {I}n situ and airborne assessments of biomass show a range of variation between 178 kg and 8.5 t of dry algae. {S}teady resource availability is required for industrial exploitation, and we demonstrate that drifting algae represent a valuable and significant renewable resource for {F}rench {P}olynesia. {M}oreover, agronomical enrichment trials using drifting algae as organic additives gave promising perspectives for agriculture uses, with an increase in size, dry mass and root development for maize plants.}, keywords = {{D}rift algae ; {S}argassum pacificum ; {T}urbinaria ornata ; {B}iomass ; {R}emote sensing ; {A}gronomic use ; {POLYNESIE} {FRANCAISE} ; {MOOREA} {LAGON}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}pplied {P}hycology}, volume = {27}, numero = {3}, pages = {1277--1287}, ISSN = {0921-8971}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1007/s10811-014-0400-9}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010064190}, }
