@article{fdi:010063890, title = {{S}urface freshwater storage variations in the {O}rinoco floodplains using multi-satellite observations}, author = {{F}rappart, {F}. and {P}apa, {F}abrice and {M}albeteau, {Y}. and {L}eon, {J}. {G}. and {R}amillien, {G}. and {P}rigent, {C}. and {S}eoane, {L}. and {S}eyler, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}rique and {C}almant, {S}t{\'e}phane}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}ariations in surface water extent and storage are poorly characterized from regional to global scales. {I}n this study, a multi-satellite approach is proposed to estimate the water stored in the floodplains of the {O}rinoco {B}asin at a monthly time-scale using remotely-sensed observations of surface water from the {G}lobal {I}nundation {E}xtent {M}ulti-{S}atellite ({GIEMS}) and stages from {E}nvisat radar altimetry. {S}urface water storage variations over 2003-2007 exhibit large interannual variability and a strong seasonal signal, peaking during summer, and associated with the flood pulse. {T}he volume of surface water storage in the {O}rinoco {B}asin was highly correlated with the river discharge at {C}iudad {B}olivar ({R} = 0.95), the closest station to the mouth where discharge was estimated, although discharge lagged one month behind storage. {T}he correlation remained high ({R} = 0.73) after removing seasonal effects. {M}ean annual variations in surface water volume represented similar to 170 km(3), contributing to similar to 45% of the {G}ravity {R}ecovery and {C}limate {E}xperiment ({GRACE})-derived total water storage variations and representing similar to 13% of the total volume of water that flowed out of the {O}rinoco {B}asin to the {A}tlantic {O}cean.}, keywords = {{O}rinoco ; floodplains ; surface water storage ; multi-satellite ; observations ; {VENEZUELA} ; {COLOMBIE} ; {ORENOQUE} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}emote {S}ensing}, volume = {7}, numero = {1}, pages = {89--110}, ISSN = {2072-4292}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.3390/rs70100089}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010063890}, }
