@article{fdi:010063327, title = {{T}ropical {A}tlantic contributions to strong rainfall variability along the {N}ortheast {B}razilian coast}, author = {{H}ounsou-{G}bo, {G}.{A}. and {A}raujo, {M}. and {B}ourl{\`e}s, {B}ernard and {V}eleda, {D}. and {S}ervain, {J}acques}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}ropical {A}tlantic ({TA}) {O}cean-atmosphere interactions and their contributions to strong variability of rainfall along the {N}ortheast {B}razilian ({NEB}) coast were investigated for the years 1974–2008. {T}he core rainy seasons of {M}arch-{A}pril and {J}une-{J}uly were identified for {F}ortaleza (northern {NEB}; {NNEB}) and {R}ecife (eastern {NEB}; {ENEB}), respectively. {L}agged linear regressions between sea surface temperature ({SST}) and pseudo wind stress ({PWS}) anomalies over the entire {TA} and strong rainfall anomalies at {F}ortaleza and {R}ecife show that the rainfall variability of these regions is differentially influenced by the dynamics of the {TA}. {W}hen the {I}ntertropical {C}onvergence {Z}one is abnormally displaced southward a few months prior to the {NNEB} rainy season, the associated meridional mode increases humidity and precipitation during the rainy season. {A}dditionally, this study shows predictive effect of {SST}, meridional {PWS}, and barrier layer thickness, in the {N}orthwestern equatorial {A}tlantic, on the {NNEB} rainfall. {T}he dynamical influence of the {TA} on the {J}une-{J}uly {ENEB} rainfall variability shows a northwestward-propagating area of strong, positively correlated {SST} from the southeastern {TA} to the southwestern {A}tlantic warm pool ({SAWP}) offshore of {B}razil. {O}ur results also show predictive effect of {SST}, zonal {PWS}, and mixed layer depth, in the {SAWP}, on the {ENEB} rainfall.}, keywords = {{INTERACTION} {OCEAN} {ATMOSPHERE} ; {PLUIE} ; {TEMPERATURE} {DE} {SURFACE} ; {TENSION} {DU} {VENT} ; {ANOMALIE} ; {ZONE} {DE} {CONVERGENCE} {TROPICALE} ; {VARIATION} {INTERANNUELLE} ; {VARIATION} {SAISONNIERE} ; {BRESIL} ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {FORTALEZA} ; {RECIFE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}dvances in {M}eteorology}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 902084 [13 ]}, ISSN = {1687-9309}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1155/2015/902084}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010063327}, }
