@article{fdi:010062666, title = {{S}ignificance of new records of {T}ridacna squamosa {L}amarck, 1819, in the {T}uamotu and {G}ambier {A}rchipelagos ({F}rench {P}olynesia)}, author = {{A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {V}an {W}ynsberge, {S}. and {F}auvelot, {C}{\'e}cile and {B}ruckner, {A}. {W}. and {R}emoissenet, {G}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he giant clam subfamily {T}ridacninae (family {C}ardiidae) is an important group of bivalve molluscs found throughout the {R}ed {S}ea and {I}ndo-{P}acific, from {E}ast {A}frica to the {E}astern {P}acific biogeographic region. {T}he {T}ridacna genus is currently revised with numerous cryptic species identified with molecular markers. {N}ew {T}ridacna records from the fringe of the known distribution areas are extremely useful to identify genetically unique species, geographic ranges, and to examine processes associated with species differentiation. {W}hile {T}ridacna maxima is abundant in {F}rench {P}olynesia ({C}entral {S}outh {P}acific {O}cean) the larger fluted giant clam {T}ridacna squamosa was formerly reported only in the {A}ustral {I}slands in the south. {F}ollowing a recent survey that spanned 23 islands and atolls of the {S}ociety, {T}uamotu and {G}ambier {A}rchipelagos, the presence of {T}. squamosa between the {C}ook {I}slands and {P}itcairn {I}slands is confirmed using both morphological and molecular information, suggesting a relic distribution across the {C}entral {P}acific {O}cean. {T}ridacna squamosa is rare, but present throughout {T}uamotu and {G}ambier. {H}owever, it remained undetected from the {S}ociety {I}slands, probably due to historical over-fishing. {T}his species is valued by local inhabitants, and is sought after mainly as gifts and also for a limited local shell trade. {T}he rarity of {T}. squamosa may call for conservation measures in the near future.}, keywords = {{S}ociety {I}slands ; giant clam ; {F}akarava {UNESCO} {B}iosphere {R}eserve ; {C}entral {P}acific ; {T}ridacna ; fishery management ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {SOCIETE} {ILES} ; {TUAMOTU} {GAMBIER} ; {POLYNESIE} {FRANCAISE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olluscan {R}esearch}, volume = {34}, numero = {4}, pages = {277--284}, ISSN = {1323-5818}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1080/13235818.2014.940662}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062666}, }
