@article{fdi:010062302, title = {{C}hecklist of the marine and estuarine fishes of {M}adang {D}istrict, {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea, western {P}acific {O}cean, with 820 new records}, author = {{F}ricke, {R}. and {A}llen, {G}. {R}. and {A}ndr{\'e}fou{\¨e}t, {S}erge and {C}hen, {W}. {J}. and {H}amel, {M}. {A}. and {L}aboute, {P}. and {M}ana, {R}. and {H}ui, {T}. {H}. and {U}yeno, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} checklist of the marine and estuarine fishes of {M}adang {D}istrict is presented, combining both previous and new records. {A}fter the recent {PAPUA} {NIUGINI} 2012 expedition, a total of 1337 species in 129 families have been recorded from the region. {O}ne species and one family is not native ({C}ichlidae: {O}reochromis mossambicus), but has been introduced. {T}he native fish fauna of {M}adang therefore consists of 1336 species in 128 families. {T}he largest families are the {G}obiidae, {L}abridae, {P}omacentridae, {A}pogonidae, {S}erranidae, {B}lenniidae, {C}haetodontidae, {S}yngnathidae and {M}uraenidae, {S}corpaenidae and {L}utjanidae, {M}yctophidae, {A}canthuridae, {S}caridae, {H}olocentridae, {C}arangidae, {P}omacanthidae and {T}etraodontidae, and {C}aesionidae. {A} total of 820 fish species (61.4 % of the total marine and estuarine fish fauna) are recorded from {M}adang for the first time. {T}he fish fauna of {M}adang includes a total of 187 species of transitional waters and 1326 species in marine habitats. {A} total of 156 species of the marine or estuarine species also occurs in freshwater. {Z}oogeographically, 1271 species have a wide distribution range, most frequently a broad {I}ndo-{W}est {P}acific distribution. {A}mong the remaining species, only 8 are endemic to {M}adang {D}istrict. {A}nthropogenic threats to the fish fauna and habitats of {M}adang {D}istrict include extensive fishing in {M}adang {L}agoon, sometimes with destructive fishing practices; the discharge of untreated sewage of human settlements, mining and industrial developments into the lagoon and nearby oceanic habitats; and destruction of mangrove habitats by extensive construction work on the shores. {T}hese anthropogenic threats may call for conservation and monitoring measures in the near future.}, keywords = {{F}ishes ; {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea ; {M}adang ; checklist ; distribution ; endemism ; new records ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {PAPOUASIE} {NOUVELLE} {GUINEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Z}ootaxa}, volume = {3832}, numero = {1}, pages = {1--247}, ISSN = {1175-5326}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.11646/zootaxa.3832.1.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062302}, }
