@article{fdi:010062267, title = {{N}atural occurrence of begomovirus recombinants associated with tomato yellow leaf curl disease co-existing with parental viruses in tomato crops and weeds in {T}unisia}, author = {{M}nari-{H}attab, {M}. and {Z}ammouri, {S}. and {P}ellegrin, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}ric and {G}authier, {N}athalie}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}omato yellow leaf curl virus disease ({TYLCVD}) is the main limiting factor for tomato production in the {M}editerranean {B}asin, and particularly in {T}unisia where climatic and crop production conditions, as well as the occurrence of many weeds, provide suitable conditions for the presence and spread of {TYLCVD} all year round. {I}n {T}unisia, epidemics in tomato-growing regions have been associated with two begomoviruses: {T}omato yellow leaf curl virus ({TYLCV}) and {T}omato yellow leaf curl {S}ardinia virus ({TYLCSV}) but the presence of recombinants between them has never been investigated. {A} large-scale survey was conducted on leaves sampled from late-season tomato crops exhibiting severe curling symptoms, from beans, and from nine nearby weed species in the {S}outh and {S}ahel regions of {T}unisia to investigate: (i) the natural occurrence of the {TYLCV} and {TYLCSV} species; (ii) the presence of the two recombinant types, {R}ec{A} and {R}ec{B}, derived from these species. {I}dentification of {TYLCV} and {TYLCSV} was based on a multiplex {PCR} with primers generating a typical pattern on gels (750 bp and 366 bp fragments, respectively). {R}ecombinants were identified by simplex {PCR}, which amplified the intergenic region, the most common recombination site described for begomoviruses, and sequencing. {T}he occurrence of {TYLCSV} and {TYLCV} was confirmed in both {T}unisian regions. {T}heir co-existence was shown on tomato and in new weed species. {T}his is the first time that recombinants between {TYLCV} and {TYLCSV} species showing 93% to 95% nucleotide identity with tomato yellow leaf curl recombinant viruses, are reported in {T}unisia in tomato and black nightshade.}, keywords = {{T}omato ; {B}egomovirus ; {TYLCV} ; {TYLCSV} ; recombinant virus ; {TUNISIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {P}lant {P}athology}, volume = {96}, numero = {1}, pages = {195--200}, ISSN = {1125-4653}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.4454/{JPP}.{V}96{I}1.043}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010062267}, }
