@article{fdi:010061914, title = {{C}rop-pasture rotation : a strategy to reduce soil greenhouse gas emissions in the {B}razilian {C}errado}, author = {{C}arvalho, {J}. {L}. {N}. and {R}aucci, {G}. {S}. and {F}razao, {L}. {A}. and {C}erri, {C}. {E}. {P}. and {B}ernoux, {M}artial and {C}erri, {C}. {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he objective of this study was to quantify the soil greenhouse gas ({GHG}) balance after the conversion of native vegetation ({NV}) to pasture and agricultural land and the conversion of agriculture to crop-pasture rotation ({CPR}) by evaluating changes in {C} stocks and {N}2{O} and {CH}4 fluxes. {S}oil sampling was carried out in {M}arch 2007 and {A}pril 2009 and {GHG} fluxes were sampled nine times between {A}pril 2007 and {M}arch 2009. {T}he conversion of {NV} to pasture and agriculture decreased soil {C} stocks, with loss rates ranging from 0.25 to 0.64 {M}g {C} ha(-1) yr(-1), respectively. {T}he implementation of {CPR} in,agriculture areas increased soil {C} stocks by 0.60 {M}g ha(-1) yr(-1). {N}2{O} emissions were higher in {CPR} and lower in {NV}. {E}mission of 1.03 kg {CH}4-{C} ha(-1) yr(-1) was observed in pasture, while in other areas consumption of {CH}4 was observed. {T}he net {GHG} emission from the soil, including all {GHG} expressed in {C}-equivalent, indicated that the conversion of {NV} to pasture and agricultural land results in emissions of 0.54 and 0.72 {M}g {C} ha(-1) yr(-1), respectively. {I}n contrast, the adoption of {CPR} in areas under crop succession was a sink of 0.36 {M}g ha(-1) yr(-1). {A}mong the evaluated land use changes, only the implementation of {CPR} proved to be a good strategy to mitigate soil {GHG} emissions in {B}razilian {C}errado.}, keywords = {{S}oil carbon stocks ; {N}2{O} emissions ; {CH}4 emissions ; {N}et {GHG} emission ; {C}rop-pasture rotation ; {C}errado biome ; {BRESIL} ; {CERRADO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}griculture {E}cosystems and {E}nvironment}, volume = {183}, numero = {}, pages = {167--175}, ISSN = {0167-8809}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.agee.2013.11.014}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061914}, }
