@article{fdi:010061781, title = {{I}mpact of seasonal hydrological variation on the distributions of tetraether lipids along the {A}mazon {R}iver in the central {A}mazon basin : implications for the {MBT}/{CBT} paleothermonneter and the {BIT} index}, author = {{Z}ell, {C}. and {K}im, {J}. {H}. and {A}bril, {G}. and {S}obrinho, {R}. {L}. and {D}orhout, {D}. and {M}oreira {T}urcq, {P}atricia and {D}amste, {J}. {S}. {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}uspended particulate matter ({SPM}) was collected along the {A}mazon {R}iver in the central {A}mazon basin and in three tributaries during the rising water ({RW}), high water ({HW}), falling water ({FW}) and low water ({LW}) season. {C}hanges in the concentration and the distribution of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (br{GDGT}s), i.e., the methylation index of branched tetraethers ({MBT}) and the cyclization of br{GDGT}s ({CBT}), were seen in the {A}mazon main stem. {T}he highest concentration of core lipid ({CL}) br{GDGT}s normalized to particulate organic carbon ({POC}) was found during the {HW} season. {D}uring the {HW} season the {MBT} and {CBT} in the {A}mazon main stem was also most similar to that of lowland {A}mazon (terra firme) soils, indicating that the highest input of soil-derived br{GDGT}s occurred due to increased water runoff. {D}uring the other seasons the {MBT} and {CBT} indicated an increased influence of in situ production of br{GDGT}s even though soils remained the main source of br{GDGT}s. {O}ur results reveal that the influence of seasonal variation is relatively small, but can be clearly detected. {C}renarchaeol was mostly produced in the river. {I}ts concentration was lower during the {HW} season compared to that of the other seasons. {H}ence, our study shows the complexity of processes that influence the {GDGT} distribution during the transport from land to ocean. {I}t emphasizes the importance of a detailed study of a river basin to interpret the {MBT}/{CBT} and {BIT} records for paleo reconstructions in adjacent marine setting.}, keywords = {branched tetraethers ; crenarchaeol ; {A}mazon {R}iver ; seasonal changes ; {MBT}/{CBT} ; {BIT} ; {AMAZONE} {BASSIN} ; {AMAZONE} {COURS} {D}'{EAU}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}rontiers in {M}icrobiology}, volume = {4}, numero = {}, pages = {228 [14 en ligne]}, ISSN = {1664-302{X}}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.3389/fmicb.2013.00228}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061781}, }
