@article{fdi:010061280, title = {{Y}ields of suspended sediment and dissolved solids from the {A}ndean basins of {E}cuador}, author = {{A}rmijos, {E}. and {L}araque, {A}lain and {B}arba, {S}. and {B}ourrel, {L}uc and {C}eron, {C}. and {L}agane, {C}hristelle and {M}agat, {P}hilippe and {M}oquet, {J}. {S}. and {P}ombosa, {R}. and {S}ondag, {F}rancis and {V}auchel, {P}hilippe and {V}era, {A}. and {G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}ater discharge and suspended and dissolved sediment data from three rivers ({N}apo, {P}astaza and {S}antiago) in the {E}cuadorian {A}mazon basin and a river in the {P}acific basin ({E}smeraldas) over a 9-year period, are presented. {T}his data set allows us to present: (a) the chemical weathering rates; (b) the erosion rates, calculated from the suspended sediment from the {A}ndean basin; (c) the spatio-temporal variability of the two regions; and (d) the relationship between this variability and the precipitation, topography, lithology and seismic activity of the area. {T}he dissolved solids load from the {E}smeraldas basin was 2 x 10(6) t year(-1), whereas for the {N}apo, {P}astaza and {S}antiago basins, it was 4, 2 and 3 x 10(6) t year(-1), respectively. {F}or stations in the {A}ndean piedmont of {E}cuador, the relationship between surface sediment and the total sediment concentration was found to be close to one. {T}his is due to minimal stratification of the suspended sediment in the vertical profile, which is attributed to turbulence and high vertical water speeds. {H}owever, during the dry season, when the water speed decreases, sediment stratification appears, but this effect can be neglected in the sediment flux calculations due to low concentration rates. {T}he suspended sediment load in the {P}acific basin was 6 x 10(6) t year(-1), and the total for the three {A}mazon basins was 47 x 10(6) t year(-1). {T}he difference between these contributions of the suspended sediment load is likely due to the tectonic uplift and the seismic and volcanic dynamics that occur on the {A}mazon side.}, keywords = {hydrology ; erosion ; {A}ndes ; chemical weathering ; {A}mazon basin ; {P}acific basin ; {EQUATEUR} ; {AMAZONE} {BASSIN} ; {ANDES} ; {OCEAN} {PACIFIC}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ydrological {S}ciences {J}ournal = {J}ournal des {S}ciences {H}ydrologiques}, volume = {58}, numero = {7}, pages = {1478--1494}, ISSN = {0262-6667}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1080/02626667.2013.826359}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061280}, }
