@article{fdi:010061265, title = {{T}he genus {M}elanthalia ({G}racilariales, {R}hodophyta) : new insights from {N}ew {C}aledonia and {N}ew {Z}ealand}, author = {{N}elson, {W}. {A}. and {P}ayri, {C}laude and {S}utherland, {J}. {E}. and {D}alen, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {S}outhern {H}emisphere red algal genus {M}elanthalia ({G}racilariales) was investigated as part of a study comparing shared elements in the floras of northern {N}ew {Z}ealand and southern {N}ew {C}aledonia. {M}olecular sequence data were obtained from specimens that were collected from throughout {N}ew {C}aledonia and {N}ew {Z}ealand and that encompassed the range of morphological variation. {B}efore this study two species were recognised from {N}ew {C}aledonia and a single species from {N}ew {Z}ealand. {O}ur results supported the recognition of a single well-delimited monophyletic species that exhibited extreme phenotypic plasticity in {N}ew {C}aledonia, whereas in samples from {N}ew {Z}ealand three lineages were identified, with two monophyletic and a third lineage, currently known from a single specimen. {B}etween the {N}ew {Z}ealand lineages there was only modest morphological variation but there was genetic differentiation between northern and southern populations. {A} single species, {M}. abscissa, was recognised in {N}ew {Z}ealand pending further research to clarify species boundaries and enable description of new taxa. {O}n the basis of sequence data, {M}elanthalia in {N}ew {Z}ealand was distinct from {A}ustralian species, with a closer relationship shown between {N}ew {Z}ealand and {N}ew {C}aledonia than between either of these and {A}ustralia. {T}he two {N}ew {C}aledonian species were synonymised, with {M}. vieillardii having priority.}, keywords = {{G}racilariales ; {M}elanthalia ; {M}. abscissa ; {M}. concinna ; {M}. fastigiata ; {M}. obtusata ; {M}. vieillardii ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; {N}ew {Z}ealand ; psb{A} ; rbc{L} ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {NOUVELLE} {ZELANDE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}hycologia}, volume = {52}, numero = {5}, pages = {426--436}, ISSN = {0031-8884}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.2216/13-137.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010061265}, }
