@article{fdi:010058988, title = {{I}nterannual variability of the {T}ropical {I}ndian {O}cean mixed layer depth}, author = {{K}eerthi, {M}. {G}. and {L}engaigne, {M}atthieu and {V}ialard, {J}{\'e}r{\^o}me and {B}oyer {M}ont{\'e}gut de, {C}. and {M}uraleedharan, {P}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the present study, interannual fluctuations of the mixed layer depth ({MLD}) in the tropical {I}ndian {O}cean are investigated from a long-term (1960-2007) eddy permitting numerical simulation and a new observational dataset built from hydrographic in situ data including {A}rgo data (1969-2008). {B}oth datasets show similar interannual variability patterns in relation with known climate modes and reasonable phase agreement in key regions. {D}ue to the scarcity of the observational dataset, we then largely rely on the model to describe the interannual {MLD} variations in more detail. {MLD} interannual variability is two to four times smaller than the seasonal cycle. {A} large fraction of {MLD} interannual variations is linked to large-scale climate modes, with the exception of coastal and subtropical regions where interannual signature of small-scale structures dominates. {T}he {I}ndian {O}cean {D}ipole is responsible for most variations in the 10{A} degrees {N}-10{A} degrees {S} band, with positive phases being associated with a shallow {MLD} in the equatorial and south-eastern {I}ndian {O}cean and a deepening in the south-central {I}ndian {O}cean. {T}he {E}l {N}io signature is rather weak, with moderate {MLD} shoaling in autumn in the eastern {A}rabian {S}ea. {S}tronger than usual monsoon jets are only associated with a very modest {MLD} deepening in the southern {A}rabian {S}ea in summer. {F}inally, positive {I}ndian {O}cean {S}ubtropical {D}ipoles are associated with a {MLD} deepening between 15 and 30{A} degrees {S}. {B}uoyancy fluxes generally appear to dominate {MLD} interannual variations except for {IOD}-induced signals in the south-central {I}ndian {O}cean in autumn, where wind stirring and {E}kman pumping dominate.}, keywords = {{M}ixed layer ; {I}nterannual variability ; {I}ndian {O}cean ; {I}ndian {O}cean {D}ipole ; {E}l {N}ino/{S}outhern {O}scillation ; {M}onsoon ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {D}ynamics}, volume = {40}, numero = {3-4}, pages = {743--759}, ISSN = {0930-7575}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1007/s00382-012-1295-2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010058988}, }
