  abstract = {{W}hile a series of new discoveries in {I}ndia or {C}hina seem to demonstrate a much older human presence during the {E}arly {P}leistocene, information concerning the demographic expansion of human groups into continental {S}outheast {A}sia is generally lacking - although osteological evidence does exist for an early human presence in {I}ndonesia. {R}ecent excavations in northern {T}hailand have produced a series of stone tools which present an ideal opportunity for reconsidering the archaeological record of the {E}arly {P}leistocene in this region. {H}ere we provide a preliminary description of the geomorphological context and an initial technological analysis of the stone tools from the {E}arly {P}leistocene site of {S}ao {D}in in northern {T}hailand. {T}echnologically, the lithic assemblage presents the most similarities with southern {C}hinese assemblages dated to between 1 {M}a and 0.5 {M}a.},
