@article{fdi:010057361, title = {{C}hanges in {A}nopheles funestus biting behavior following universal coverage of long-lasting insecticidal nets in {B}enin}, author = {{M}oiroux, {N}icolas and {G}omez, {M}. {B}. and {P}ennetier, {C}{\'e}dric and {E}langa {N}dille, {E}mmanuel and {D}jenontin, {A}rmel and {C}handre, {F}abrice and {D}jegbe, {I}. and {G}uis, {H}. and {C}orbel, {V}incent}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground. {B}ehavioral modification of malaria vectors in response to vector control methods is of great concern. {W}e investigated whether full coverage of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets ({LLIN}s) may induce a switch in biting behavior in {A}nopheles funestus, a major malaria vector in {A}frica. {M}ethods. {H}uman-landing collections were conducted indoor and outdoor in 2 villages ({L}okohoue and {T}okoli) in {B}enin before and 1 year and 3 years after implementation of universal {LLIN} coverage. {P}roportion of outdoor biting ({POB}) and median catching times ({MCT}) were compared. {T}he resistance of {A}. funestus to deltamethrin was monitored using bioassays. {R}esults. {MCT} of {A}. funestus switched from 2 {AM} in {L}okohoue and 3 {AM} in {T}okoli to 5 {AM} after 3 years ({M}ann-{W}hitney {U} test, {P} < .0001). {I}n {T}okoli, {POB} increased from 45% to 68.1% (odds ratio = 2.55; 95 confidence interval = 1.72-3.78; {P} < .0001) 1 year after the universal coverage, whereas {POB} was unchanged in {L}okohoue. {I}n {L}okohoue, however, the proportion of {A}. funestus that bites after 6 {AM} was 26%. {B}ioassays showed no resistance to deltamethrin. {C}onclusions. {T}his study provides evidence for a switch in malaria vectors' biting behavior after the implementation of {LLIN} at universal coverage. {T}hese findings might have direct consequences for malaria control in {A}frica and highlighted the need for alternative strategies for better targeting malaria vectors.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {I}nfectious {D}iseases}, volume = {206}, numero = {10}, pages = {1622--1629}, ISSN = {0022-1899}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1093/infdis/jis565}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057361}, }
