@article{fdi:010057360, title = {{E}nvironmental changes in the highlands of the western {A}ndean {C}ordillera, southern {P}eru, during the {H}olocene}, author = {{K}uentz, {A}. and {L}edru, {M}arie-{P}ierre and {T}houret, {J}. {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the tropical {A}ndes, impacts of both natural and anthropogenic disturbances have been detected over a period exceeding 4000 years. {H}owever, the history of the environment remains unknown in most {A}ndean regions. {T}o infer possible interactions between climate and humans, we analysed the pollen content of an 8.5 m deep peat core extracted from a peat bog located near the {N}evado {C}oropuna volcano on the slope of the {W}estern {C}ordillera in southern {P}eru (15 degrees 30{S}, 72 degrees 40{W}, 6380 m). {R}esults showed that taxa of the upper {P}una expanded when cooler and moister climatic conditions prevailed during a time period that includes the early and the mid {H}olocene (9700-5200 cal. yr {BP}). {A}n increase in shrub pollen frequencies and a decrease in the {P}oaceae/{A}steraceae ratio are attributed to a drier climate during the late {H}olocene (5200-3000 cal. yr {BP}). {A}fter 3000 cal. yr {BP}, the vegetation cover resembled that of today. {B}oth archaeological and pollen data attest to the beginning of agriculture from 2200 cal. yr {BP}. {A}round 900 cal. yr {BP}, the vegetation cover suddenly changed, probably because of a colder and drier climate. {P}ast societies continued their agricultural activities despite this abrupt change. {O}ur results emphasize the specific geographical location of {N}evado {C}oropuna astride the {W}estern {C}ordillera and the western edge of the {A}ltiplano, which is consequently subject to both {P}acific and {A}tlantic influences.}, keywords = {climatic change ; {H}olocene ; human impact ; pollen analysis ; {P}una ; tropical {A}ndes}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}olocene}, volume = {22}, numero = {11}, pages = {1215--1226}, ISSN = {0959-6836}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1177/0959683611409772}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057360}, }
