@article{fdi:010057310, title = {{D}ynamical and statistical downscaling of the {F}rench {M}editerranean climate : uncertainty assessment}, author = {{V}rac, {M}. and {D}robinski, {P}. and {M}erlo, {A}. and {H}errmann, {M}arine and {L}avaysse, {C}. and {L}i, {L}. and {S}omot, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{ERA}-40 reanalyses, and simulations from three regional climate models ({RCM}s) ({ALADIN}, {LMDZ}, and {WRF}) and from one statistical downscaling model ({CDF}-t) are used to evaluate the uncertainty in downscaling of wind, temperature, and rainfall cumulative distribution functions ({CDF}s) for eight stations in the {F}rench {M}editerranean basin over 1991-2000. {T}he uncertainty is quantified using the {C}ramer-von {M}ises score ({C}v{M}) to measure the "distance" between the simulated and observed {CDF}s. {T}he ability of the three {RCM}s and {CDF}-t to simulate the "climate" variability is quantified with the explained variance, variance ratio and extreme occurrence. {T}he study shows that despite their differences, the three {RCM}s display very similar performance. {I}n terms of global distributions (i.e. {C}v{M}), all models perform better than {ERA}-40 for both seasons and variables. {H}owever, looking at variance criteria, {RCM}s are not always much better than {ERA}-40 reanalyses, whereas {CDF}-t produces accurate results when applied to {ERA}-40. {I}n a second step, a combined statistical/dynamical downscaling approach has been used, consisting in applying {CDF}-t to the {RCM} outputs. {I}t shows that {CDF}-t applied to the {RCM} outputs does not necessarily produce better results than those from {CDF}-t directly applied to {ERA}-40. {I}t also shows that {CDF}-t applied to {RCM}s generally improves the downscaled {CDF}s and that the "additional" added value of {CDF}-t applied to the {RCM}s is independent of the performance of the {RCM}s in terms of {C}v{M}, explained variance, variance ratio and extreme occurrence.}, keywords = {{ZONE} {MEDITERRANEENNE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}atural {H}azards and {E}arth {S}ystem {S}ciences}, volume = {12}, numero = {9}, pages = {2769--2784}, ISSN = {1561-8633}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.5194/nhess-12-2769-2012}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057310}, }
