@article{fdi:010057252, title = {{L}ife strategy traits of the liana {S}ericostachys scandens spreading in the montane forests in the {K}ahuzi-{B}iega national park ({DR} {C}ongo)}, author = {{M}asumbuko {N}dabaga, {C}. and {H}erpigny, {B}. and {B}arbier, {N}icolas and {H}abiyaremye {M}uhashy, {F}. and {L}ejoly, {J}. and {M}eerts, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ericostachys scandens is a monocarpic and heliophilous liana, native in tropical {A}frican forests. {I}n the montane forests of the {K}ahuzi-{B}iega {N}ational {P}ark ({KBNP}) ({E}ast of {DR} {C}ongo), it has been expanding very strongly for a decade, and is currently considered as having negative impacts on biodiversity conservation. {I}n this paper, we test if {S}. scandens differs from three co-occurring, native, non spreading lianas ({G}ouania longispicata, {T}acazzea apiculata and {A}denia bequaertii) for functional traits which might influence plant expansion. {F}or leaf traits ({SLA}, dry matter content, nitrogen concentration), {S}. scandens did not show extreme values compared to those of the three other lianas. {I}n contrast, {S}. scandens had much higher biomass allocation to sexual reproduction. {I}t also differs from the three other lianas for its reproductive strategy that combines both vegetative propagation and sexual reproduction, and propagule dispersal by wind. {M}oreover, {S}. scandens has larger leaves and a greater number of lateral branches per unit stem length. {I}t is argued that the particular combination of functional traits exhibited by {S}. scandens may in part explain its propensity to behave as an opportunistic weed in the disturbed areas in the montane forests of {K}ahuzi-{B}iega.}, keywords = {{L}ife strategy ; {S}ericostachys scandens ; montane forest ; {K}ahuzi-{B}iega ; {N}ational {P}ark ; functional traits ; {N}ative expanding species}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {M}ountain {S}cience}, volume = {9}, numero = {5}, pages = {665--675}, ISSN = {1672-6316}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1007/s11629-012-2382-x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057252}, }
