@article{fdi:010057231, title = {{T}he heterogeneous spatial and temporal patterns of behavior of small pelagic fish in an array of {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evices ({FAD}s)}, author = {{C}apello, {M}anuela and {S}oria, {M}arc and {C}otel, {P}ascal and {P}otin, {G}a{\¨e}l and {D}agorn, {L}aurent and {F}r{\'e}on, {P}ierre}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}dentifying spatial and temporal patterns in fish movements can reveal the driving factors that govern the behavior of fish in their environment. {I}n this study, we characterized the spatial and temporal occupation of 37 acoustically tagged bigeye scads ({S}elar crumenophthalmus) in an array of shallow {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evices ({FAD}s) to clarify the mechanism that leads fish to associate with {FAD}s. {A} comparison of the number of visits and residence times exhibited by the fish at different {FAD}s revealed a strong variability over the array of {FADS}, with the emergence of a leading {FAD} that recorded the majority of visits and retained the fish for a longer period of time. {W}e found diel variability in the residence times, with fish associated at daytime and exploring the array of {FAD}s at nighttime. {W}e demonstrated that this diel temporal pattern was amplified in the leading {FAD}. {W}e identified a 24-hour periodicity for a subset of individuals associated to the leading {FAD}, thus suggesting that those fish were able to find this {FAD} after night excursions. {T}he modeling of fish movements based on a {M}onte {C}arlo sampling of inter-{FAD} transitions revealed that the observed spatial heterogeneity in the number of visits could not be explained through simple array-connectivity arguments. {S}imilarly, we demonstrated that the high residence times recorded at the leading {FAD} were not due to the spatial arrangement of individual fish having different associative characters. {W}e discussed the relationships between these patterns of association with the {FAD}s, the exploration of the {FAD} array and the possible effects of social interactions and environmental factors.}, keywords = {{A}coustic tagging ; {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evices ; {FAD} ; {S}patial and temporal patterns}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {E}xperimental {M}arine {B}iology and {E}cology}, volume = {430}, numero = {}, pages = {56--62}, ISSN = {0022-0981}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jembe.2012.06.022}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057231}, }
