@article{fdi:010057179, title = {{P}hylogenetic position and taxonomy of {C}ycloseris explanulata and {C}. wellsi ({S}cleractinia : {F}ungiidae) : lost mushroom corals find their way home}, author = {{B}enzoni, {F}rancesca and {A}rrigoni, {R}. and {S}tefani, {F}. and {R}eijnen, {B}. {T}. and {M}ontano, {S}. and {H}oeksema, {B}. {W}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he scleractinian species {P}sammocora explanulata and {C}oscinaraea wellsi were originally classified in the family {S}iderastreidae, but in a recent morpho-molecular study it appeared that they are more closely related to each other and to the {F}ungiidae than to any siderastreid taxon. {A} subsequent morpho-molecular study of the {F}ungiidae provided new insights regarding the phylogenetic relationships within that family. {I}n the present study existing molecular data sets of both families were analyzed jointly with those of new specimens and sequences of {P}. explanulata and {C}. wellsi. {T}he results indicate that both species actually belong to the {C}ycloseris clade within the family {F}ungiidae. {A} reappraisal of their morphologic characters based on museum specimens and recently collected material substantiate the molecular results. {C}onsequently, they are renamed {C}ycloseris explanulata and {C}. wellsi. {T}hey are polystomatous and encrusting like {C}. mokai, another species recently added to the genus, whereas all {C}ycloseris species were initially thought to be monostomatous and free-living. {I}n the light of the new findings, the taxonomy and distribution data of {C}. explanulata and {C}. wellsi have been updated and revised. {F}inally, the ecological implications of the evolutionary history of the three encrusting polystomatous {C}ycloseris species and their free-living monostomatous congeners are discussed.}, keywords = {{COI} ; {C}oscinaraea wellsi ; {P}sammocora explanulata ; r{DNA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ontributions to {Z}oology}, volume = {81}, numero = {3}, pages = {125--146}, ISSN = {1383-4517}, year = {2012}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057179}, }
