@article{fdi:010057019, title = {{C}osta {R}ican soils contain highly insecticidal granulovirus strains against {P}hthorimaea operculella and {T}ecia solanivora}, author = {{G}omez-{B}onilla, {Y}. and {L}opez-{F}erber, {M}. and {C}aballero, {P}. and {L}{\'e}ry, {X}avier and {M}unoz, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he aim of this work was to isolate and characterize novel {P}hthorimaea operculella granulovirus ({P}hop{GV}) strains from {C}osta {R}ican soils. {T}hree novel strains, named {P}hop{GV}-{CR}3, {P}hop{GV}-{CR}4 and {P}hop{GV}-{CR}5, were isolated from three locations in {C}osta {R}ica, {A}lvarado, {Z}arcero and {A}bangares, respectively, by means of soaking potato tubers with diluted soil samples. {A}n additional strain, {P}hop{GV}-{CR}2, was identified from diseased larvae from a {T}ecia solanivora laboratory culture. {R}estriction fragment length polymorphisms obtained for each isolate with six restriction endonucleases ({REN}s) allowed their identification as four distinct {P}hop{GV} strains. {B}oth {REN} and {P}olymerase chain reaction analyses indicated the existence of an array of genotypic variants present in all isolates. {B}ioassays in {P}.similar to operculella and {T}.similar to solanivora showed that {P}hop{GV}-{CR}3 was well adapted to the two coexisting hosts with high levels of pathogenicity against both pest species. {T}he mean lethal dose values of this strain were 2.8 {OB}s/mm2 for {P}.similar to operculella and less than 0.5 {OB}s/mm2 for {T}.similar to solanivora. {W}e conclude that {P}hop{GV}-{CR}3 shows great promise for soil application against these pests in {C}osta {R}ican potato crops.}, keywords = {betabaculovirus ; bioinsecticide ; persistence ; {P}hop{GV} ; potato tuberworm ; soil isolates ; viral host adaptation}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}pplied {E}ntomology}, volume = {136}, numero = {7}, pages = {530--538}, ISSN = {0931-2048}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1439-0418.2011.01679.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010057019}, }
