  abstract = {{W}e analysed whether mutations associated with resistance to antiretroviral ({ARV}) drugs circulate among treatment-naive {HIV}-1-infected individuals at a period when these drugs started to become more widely available in {A}frica. {O}verall, major resistance mutations in the pol gene, as defined by the {I}nternational {AIDS} {S}ociety {R}esistance {T}esting-{USA} panel, were observed in 16 treatment-naive individuals. {E}ight of the 97 patients tested in {B}urkina {F}aso bore mutations conferring resistance to one drug class of {ARV} drugs: two to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors ({NRTI}s; {M}41{L} [n=1], {M}41{L}+{T}69{S} [n=1]), four to non-{NRTI}s ({NNRTI}s; {V}106{A}/{V} [n=1] and {V}108{I} [n=3]) and two to protease inhibitors ({P}ls; {L}33{F} [n=2]). {I}n {C}ameroon, resistance mutations were identified in 8 of 102 patients: three to {P}ls ({M}46{I}/{L} [n=2], {L}33{F} [n=1]), three to {NRTI}s ({T}69{N}/{T} [n=1], {M}184{V} [n=1], {A}62{V} [n=1]) and two to {NNRTI}s ({P}236{L} [n=1], {V}108{I} [n=1]). {I}t is important to note that not all genotypic drug-resistance algorithms give similar interpretations to the observed mutations. {P}opulation surveillance for {ARV} drug resistance is required and should be included in all implementation programmes.},
