@article{fdi:010055991, title = {{D}eep-sea origin and in-situ diversification of {C}hrysogorgiid octocorals}, author = {{P}ante, {E}. and {F}rance, {S}. {C}. and {C}ouloux, {A}. and {C}ruaud, {C}. and {M}c{F}adden, {C}. {S}. and {S}amadi, {S}arah and {W}atling, {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he diversity, ubiquity and prevalence in deep waters of the octocoral family {C}hrysogorgiidae {V}errill, 1883 make it noteworthy as a model system to study radiation and diversification in the deep sea. {H}ere we provide the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the {C}hrysogorgiidae, and compare phylogeny and depth distribution. {P}hylogenetic relationships among 10 of 14 currently-described {C}hrysogorgiidae genera were inferred based on mitochondrial (mt{M}ut{S}, cox1) and nuclear (18{S}) markers. {B}athymetric distribution was estimated from multiple sources, including museum records, a literature review, and our own sampling records (985 stations, 2345 specimens). {G}enetic analyses suggest that the {C}hrysogorgiidae as currently described is a polyphyletic family. {S}hallow-water genera, and two of eight deep-water genera, appear more closely related to other octocoral families than to the remainder of the monophyletic, deep-water chrysogorgiid genera. {M}onophyletic chrysogorgiids are composed of strictly ({I}ridogorgia {V}errill, 1883, {M}etallogorgia {V}ersluys, 1902, {R}adicipes {S}tearns, 1883, {P}seudochrysogorgia {P}ante & {F}rance, 2010) and predominantly ({C}hrysogorgia {D}uchassaing & {M}ichelotti, 1864) deep-sea genera that diversified in situ. {T}his group is sister to gold corals ({P}rimnoidae {M}ilne {E}dwards, 1857) and deep-sea bamboo corals ({K}eratoisidinae {G}ray, 1870), whose diversity also peaks in the deep sea. {N}ine species of {C}hrysogorgia that were described from depths shallower than 200 m, and mt{M}ut{S} haplotypes sequenced from specimens sampled as shallow as 101 m, suggest a shallow-water emergence of some {C}hrysogorgia species.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {7}, numero = {6}, pages = {e38357}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0038357}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010055991}, }
