@article{fdi:010055970, title = {{A}eschynomene evenia, a model plant for studying the molecular genetics of the nod-independent {R}hizobium-legume symbiosis}, author = {{A}rrighi, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {C}artieaux, {F}abienne and {B}rown, {S}. {C}. and {R}odier-{G}oud, {M}. and {B}oursot, {M}arc and {F}ardoux, {J}o{\¨e}l and {P}atrel, {D}elphine and {G}ully, {D}jamel and {F}abre, {S}. and {C}haintreuil, {C}l{\'e}mence and {G}iraud, {E}ric}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}esearch on the nitrogen-fixing symbiosis has been focused, thus far, on two model legumes, {M}edicago truncatula and {L}otus japonicus, which use a sophisticated infection process involving infection thread formation. {H}owever, in 25% of the legumes, the bacterial entry occurs more simply in an intercellular fashion. {A}mong them, some {A}eschynomene spp. are nodulated by photosynthetic {B}radyrhizohium spp. that do not produce {N}od factors. {T}his interaction is believed to represent a living testimony of the ancestral state of the rhizobium legume symbiosis. {T}o decipher the mechanisms of this {N}od-independent process, we propose {A}eschynomene evenia as a model legume because it presents all the characteristics required for genetic and molecular analysis. {I}t is a short-perennial and autogamous species, with a diploid and relatively small genome (2n = 20; 460 {M}b/{IC}). {A}. evenia `{IRFL}6945' is nodulated by the well-characterized photosynthetic {B}radyrhizobium sp. strain {ORS}278 and is efficiently transformed by {A}grobacterizon rhizogenes. {A}eschynomene evenia is genetically homozygous but polymorphic accessions were found. {A} manual hybridization procedure has been set up, allowing directed crosses. {T}herefore, it should be relatively straightforward to unravel the molecular determinants of the {N}od-independent process in {A}. evenia. {T}his should shed new light on the evolution of rhizobium legume symbiosis and could have important agronomic implications.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}olecular {P}lant-{M}icrobe {I}nteractions}, volume = {25}, numero = {7}, pages = {851--861}, ISSN = {0894-0282}, year = {2012}, DOI = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/{MPMI}-02-12-0045-{TA}}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010055970}, }
