@article{fdi:010055800, title = {{C}oncurrence of dermatological and ophthalmological morbidity in onchocerciasis}, author = {{C}offeng, {L}. {E}. and {F}obi, {G}. and {O}zoh, {G}. and {B}issek, {A}. {C}. and {N}latte, {B}. {O}. and {E}nyong, {P}. and {O}linga, {J}. {M}. {O}. and {Z}oure, {H}. {G}. {M}. and {H}abbema, {J}. {D}. {F}. and {S}tolk, {W}. {A}. and de {V}las, {S}. {J}. and {B}oussinesq, {M}ichel and {N}oma, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}revalence of skin and eye disorders in {A}frican onchocerciasis (river blindness) is well documented. {H}owever, less is known about their joint occurrence. {I}nformation on concurrence may improve our understanding of disease pathogenesis and is required to estimate the disease burden of onchocerciasis. {W}e analysed data from 765 individuals from forest villages in the {K}umba and {N}gambe {H}ealth districts, {C}ameroon. {T}hese data were collected in 1998, as baseline data for the evaluation of the {A}frican {P}rogramme for {O}nchocerciasis {C}ontrol. {C}oncurrence of symptoms was assessed using logistic regression. {O}nchocerciasis was highly endemic in the study population (63% nodule prevalence among males aged >= 20). {C}onsiderable overall prevalences of onchocercal visual impairment (low vision or blindness: 4%), troublesome itch (15%), reactive skin disease (19%), and skin depigmentation (25%) were observed. {T}he association between onchocercal visual impairment and skin depigmentation ({OR} 9.0, 95% {CI} 3.9-20.8) was partly explained by age and exposure to infection ({OR} 3.0, 95% {CI} 1.2-7.7). {T}he association between troublesome itch and reactive skin disease was hardly affected by adjustment (adjusted {OR} 6.9, 95% {CI} 4.2-11.1). {C}oncluding, there is significant concurrence of morbidities within onchocerciasis. {O}ur results suggest a possible role of host characteristics in the pathogenesis of depigmentation and visual impairment. {F}urther, we propose a method to deal with concurrence when estimating the burden of disease.}, keywords = {{C}oncurrence ; {C}orrelation ; {O}nchocerciasis ; {S}kin disease ; {E}ye disease ; {B}urden of disease}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ransactions of the {R}oyal {S}ociety of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {106}, numero = {4}, pages = {243--251}, ISSN = {0035-9203}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1016/j.trstmh.2011.12.006}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010055800}, }
