@article{fdi:010054423, title = {{T}he {R}ungwe volcanic province, {T}anzania : a volcanological review}, author = {{F}ontijn, {K}. and {W}illiamson, {D}avid and {M}bede, {E}. and {E}rnst, {G}.{G}.{J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {R}ungwe {V}olcanic {P}rovince in {SW} {T}anzania is a densely populated area that is considered volcanically active. {A}s part of the {E}ast {A}frican {R}ift {S}ystem, a significant control of tectonic activity seems to exist on the location and also potential destabilization of volcanic edifices. {T}hree large volcanoes, {N}gozi. {R}ungwe, and {K}yejo, dominate the landscape and all show contrasting eruptive behaviour in the recent geological past. {K}yejo volcano is a flow-dominated volcano that had a historic lava flow eruption. {L}ake sediment cores, drilled in {L}akes {M}alawi, {M}asoko, {R}ukwa, and {T}anganyika, provide a record of frequent explosive eruptions in the last few tens of thousands of years. {I}n combination with on-land stratigraphic observations, they constrain the minimum eruptive frequency of especially {R}ungwe and {N}gozi volcanoes. {B}oth volcanoes had {P}linian-style eruptions in the {H}olocene. {T}he most striking documented {R}ungwe eruption, the ca. 4 ka {R}ungwe {P}umice, is a rare case of a {P}linian eruption in near-wind-free conditions. {F}urthermore, the {R}ungwe {P}umice, just like any other {R}ungwe tephra deposit, does not show any evidence of pyroclastic density current deposits. {A}part from explosive eruptions at a range of scales happening every few hundred years at {R}ungwe, the volcano also experienced at least two sector collapse events generating debris avalanches. {A}ll existing evidence shows that the {R}ungwe {V}olcanic {P}rovince is prone to future significant explosive eruptions. {T}o further assess, quantify and mitigate volcanic hazard risks, extensive and systematic multidisciplinary geological research, and both volcanic and tectonic monitoring are needed.}, keywords = {{E}ast {A}frican {R}ift {S}ystem ; {R}ungwe {V}olcanic {P}rovince ; {E}xplosive eruptions ; {P}honolite-trachyte ; {V}olcano-tectonic interactions ; {T}anzania ; {TANZANIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}frican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {63}, numero = {}, pages = {12--31}, ISSN = {1464-343{X}}, year = {2012}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jafrearsci.2011.11.005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010054423}, }
