@article{fdi:010054296, title = {{S}ubsurface connections in the eastern tropical {P}acific during {L}a {N}ina 1999-2001 and {E}l {N}ino 2002-2003}, author = {{M}ontes, {I}. and {S}chneider, {W}. and {C}olas, {F}. and {B}lanke, {B}. and {E}chevin, {V}incent}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he subsurface connections between the {E}quatorial {C}urrent {S}ystem ({ECS}) and the {P}eru {C}urrent {S}ystem ({PCS}) between 1999 and 2005 are investigated with a primitive-equation, eddy-resolving regional model that is forced with realistic atmospheric and lateral oceanic conditions. {S}pecific attention is given to the 1999-2000 {L}a {N}ina and the 2002-2003 {E}l {N}ino. {T}he model's skill is assessed through a comparison with satellite-derived sea level anomalies and in situ sea surface temperature time series. {T}he model reproduces fairly well the known dynamics of the region for climatological conditions, and the numerical solution obtained for the particular 1999-2000 and 2002-2003 events presents patterns rather typical of cold and warm phases of {E}l {N}ino-{S}outhern {O}scillation ({ENSO}). {E}ulerian and {L}agrangian diagnoses are used to derive relevant information about the density and velocity vertical structures of the {ECS} and the {PCS}. {T}he transports of the major currents in the region are shown to differ a lot between the 1999-2000 {L}a {N}ina and the 2002-2003 {E}l {N}ino. {T}he equatorial subsurface currents transfer significantly more water into the eastern tropical {P}acific during {L}a {N}ina than during {E}l {N}ino, whereas the {P}eru-{C}hile {U}ndercurrent ({PCUC}) carries more water during {E}l {N}ino. {T}he equatorial subsurface currents, and especially the primary {S}outhern {S}ubsurface {C}ountercurrent, contribute to 80% of the {PCUC} transport during the 1999-2000 cold phase. {T}his ratio falls down to only 20% during the 2002-2003 warm phase.}, keywords = {{PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch-{O}ceans}, volume = {116}, numero = {}, pages = {{C}12022}, ISSN = {0148-0227}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1029/2011jc007624}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010054296}, }
