@article{fdi:010054220, title = {{V}ivax malaria in {M}auritania includes infection of a {D}uffy-negative individual}, author = {{W}urtz, {N}. and {L}ekweiry, {K}. {M}. and {B}ogreau, {H}. and {P}radines, {B}. and {R}ogier, {C}. and {O}uld {M}ohamed {S}alem {B}oukhary, {A}.{S}. and {H}afid, {J}. {E}. and {O}uld {A}hmedou {S}alem, {M}.{S}. and {T}rape, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {B}asco, {L}eonardo and {B}riolant, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {D}uffy blood group polymorphisms are important in areas where {P}lasmodium vivax is present because this surface antigen is thought to act as a key receptor for this parasite. {I}n the present study, {D}uffy blood group genotyping was performed in febrile uninfected and {P}. vivax-infected patients living in the city of {N}ouakchott, {M}auritania. {M}ethods: {P}lasmodium vivax was identified by real-time {PCR}. {T}he {D}uffy blood group genotypes were determined by standard {PCR} followed by sequencing of the promoter region and exon 2 of the {D}uffy gene in 277 febrile individuals. {F}isher's exact test was performed in order to assess the significance of variables. {R}esults: {I}n the {M}oorish population, a high frequency of the {FYBES}/{FYBES} genotype was observed in uninfected individuals (27.8%), whereas no {P}. vivax-infected patient had this genotype. {T}his was followed by a high level of {FYA}/{FYB}, {FYB}/{FYB}, {FYB}/{FYBES} and {FYA}/{FYBES} genotype frequencies, both in the {P}. vivax-infected and uninfected patients. {I}n other ethnic groups ({P}oular, {S}oninke, {W}olof), only the {FYBES}/{FYBES} genotype was found in uninfected patients, whereas the {FYA}/{FYBES} genotype was observed in two {P}. vivax-infected patients. {I}n addition, one patient belonging to the {W}olof ethnic group presented the {FYBES}/{FYBES} genotype and was infected by {P}. vivax. {C}onclusions: {T}his study presents the {D}uffy blood group polymorphisms in {N}ouakchott {C}ity and demonstrates that in {M}auritania, {P}. vivax is able to infect {D}uffy-negative patients. {F}urther studies are necessary to identify the process that enables this {D}uffy-independent {P}. vivax invasion of human red blood cells.}, keywords = {{P}lasmodium vivax ; {D}uffy blood group ; {M}auritania ; polymorphism ; malaria}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}alaria {J}ournal}, volume = {10}, numero = {}, pages = {336 [8 ]}, ISSN = {1475-2875}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1186/1475-2875-10-336}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010054220}, }
