  abstract = {{S}outh {A}frica is committed to moving towards an {E}cosystem {A}pproach to {F}isheries ({EAF}) and has laid the foundations for this using a three-pronged approach: through a project ({EAF} {F}easibility {S}tudy) under the {B}enguela {C}urrent {L}arge {M}arine {E}cosystem {P}rogramme; through a dedicated scientific working group established by the {M}arine and {C}oastal {M}anagement branch of {S}outh {A}frica's {D}epartment of {E}nvironmental {A}ffairs and {T}ourism; and through collaborative scientific and modelling studies within the joint {F}rench-{S}outh {A}frican '{U}pwelling {E}cosystems' {P}rogramme. {T}his contribution provides an overview of the progress made towards developing an {EAF} in {S}outh {A}frica, both on the scientific front in terms of improved understanding of the functioning of the {B}enguela ecosystem and the ways in which its ecosystem components interact, and regarding the practical ways being explored to enable scientific advice to feed in to {S}outh {A}frican fisheries management while taking into account broad stakeholder concerns. {T}he paper focusses particularly on the role played by scientific contributions (research and monitoring) to address these ecosystem issues in three important {S}outh {A}frican fisheries - pelagic, demersal and rock lobster - so that the appropriate management measures can be put into place. {S}ocio-economic concerns are included for the rock lobster fishery.},
