@article{fdi:010053899, title = {{T}he {M}w=6.3, {N}ovember 21, 2004, {L}es {S}aintes earthquake ({G}uadeloupe) : tectonic setting, slip model and static stress changes}, author = {{F}euillet, {N}. and {B}eauducel, {F}. and {J}acques, {E}. and {T}apponnier, {P}. and {D}elouis, {B}. and {B}azin, {S}. and {V}all{\'e}e, {M}artin and {K}ing, {G}. {C}. {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}n {N}ovember 21, 2004, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred offshore, 10 km south of {L}es {S}aintes archipelago in {G}uadeloupe ({F}rench {W}est {I}ndies). {T}here were more than 30000 aftershocks recorded in the following two years, most of them at shallow depth near the islands of the archipelago. {T}he main shock and its main aftershock of {F}ebruary 14, 2005 ({M}-w = 5.8) ruptured a {NE}-dipping normal fault ({R}oseau fault), mapped and identified as active from high-resolution bathymetric data a few years before. {T}his fault belongs to an arc-parallel en echelon fault system that follows the inner edge of the northern part of the {L}esser {A}ntilles arc, accommodating the sinistral component of oblique convergence between the {N}orth {A}merican and {C}aribbean plates. {T}he distribution of aftershocks and damage (destruction and landslides) are consistent with the main fault plane location and attitude. {T}he slip model of the main shock, obtained by inverting jointly global broadband and local strong motion records, is characterized by two main slip zones located 5 to 10 km to the {SE} and {NW} of the hypocenter. {T}he main shock is shown to have increased the {C}oulomb stress at the tips of the ruptured plane by more than 4 bars where most of the aftershocks occurred, implying that failures on fault system were mainly promoted by static stress changes. {T}he earthquake also had an effect on volcanic activity since the {B}oiling {L}ake in {D}ominica drained twice, probably as a result of the extensional strain induced by the earthquake and its main aftershock.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch. {S}olid {E}arth}, volume = {116}, numero = {}, pages = {{B}10301}, ISSN = {0148-0227}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1029/2011jb008310}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053899}, }
