@article{fdi:010053848, title = {{A}ccumulation of organo-metallic complexes in laterites and the formation of {A}luandic {A}ndosols in the {N}ilgiri {H}ills (southern {I}ndia) : similarities and differences with {U}mbric {P}odzols}, author = {{C}aner, {L}. and {P}etit, {S}. and {J}oussein, {E}. and {F}ritsch, {E}mmanuel and {H}erbillon, {A}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e have investigated the speciation and distribution of iron ({F}e) and aluminium ({A}l) between minerals and organic species in {A} and {B} horizons of two {A}luandic {A}ndosols with {X}-ray diffraction, thermal analyses, visible diffuse reflectance and {F}ourier transform infrared ({FTIR}) spectroscopies, together with selective and total chemical extractions. {T}he two {A}luandic {A}ndosols of the {N}ilgiri {H}ighlands (south {I}ndia) have formed at the expense of intensively weathered lateritic formations of the {E}ocene. {D}ata revealed that {A}l and {F}e were predominantly stored in end-weathering products of laterites, mainly as gibbsite and {F}e (hydr)oxides in {B} horizons of the {A}luandic {A}ndosols. {T}hese secondary minerals are gradually replaced by organo-metallic complexes in the topsoil {A} horizons exhibiting andic properties. {W}e then indicate that formation of the organo-metallic complexes results from weathering of the dominant crystalline {A}l-and {F}e-(hydr)oxides mediated by the organic ligands and complexation of the polyvalent metals following the accumulation of organic matter. {S}uch weathering and complexation mechanisms are therefore similar to those recently ascribed to deferralitization and the formation of freely drained {U}mbric {P}odzols ({H}umus-{P}odzols) in the upper {A}mazon {B}asin. {I}n the present case, large supplies of both {A}l- and {F}e-bearing minerals provide large metal: carbon ratios that prevent the mobility of the organo-metallic complexes and induce the formation of {A}luandic {A}ndosols rather than {P}odzols.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}uropean {J}ournal of {S}oil {S}cience}, volume = {62}, numero = {5}, pages = {754--764}, ISSN = {1351-0754}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1365-2389.2011.01389.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053848}, }
