  abstract = {{N}orth-{W}est {A}frica is an outstanding region to study biogeographic patterns in biodiversity distribution. {T}his study identifies biogeographic affinities and areas of probable occurrence for seven viperid snakes through the combination of high resolution presence data and environmental factors. {V}ipers exhibited distinct biogeographical affinities: {B}itis arietans was mostly found along savannahs, {E}chis leucogaster along the {S}ahel/savannahs, {C}erastes cerastes and {C} vipera throughout most desertic areas, {D}aboia mauritanica in coastal and hilly regions and {V}ipera latastei and {V}. monticola in almost only mountains. {S}uitable habitats were predicted for {B}. arietans in southern {S}enegal and {M}ali, and coastal southern {M}orocco, for {E}. leucogaster in southern {M}auritania, {S}enegal, {M}ali, and fragmented habitats in {S}aharan mountains and south-western {M}orocco, for {C}. cerastes from the {A}tlantic coast to northern {A}lgeria, for {C}. vipera in the central region, for {D}. mauritanica in northern-western {M}orocco and northern {A}lgeria, for {V}. latastei in the {R}if, {M}iddle {A}tlas and coastal {M}orocco, and for {V} monticola in the {H}igh {A}tlas. {I}n potential sympatric areas, competition is probably limiting distribution, resulting in parapatric ranges. {N}orthern {S}aharan populations of {B}. arietans and {E}. leucogaster are isolated. {S}aharan mountains and coastal southwestern {M}orocco constitute isolated suitable areas for sub-{S}aharan relicts.},
