@article{fdi:010053806, title = {{P}opulation genetics of {G}lossina palpalis palpalis from central {A}frican sleeping sickness foci}, author = {{T}anekou, {T}. {T}. and {M}elachio, {T}. {T}. and {S}imo, {G}. and {R}avel, {S}ophie and {D}e {M}eeûs, {T}hierry and {C}ausse, {S}andrine and {S}olano, {P}hilippe and {L}utumba, {P}. and {A}songanyi, {T}. and {N}jiokou, {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {G}lossina palpalis palpalis ({D}iptera: {G}lossinidae) is widespread in west {A}frica, and is the main vector of sleeping sickness in {C}ameroon as well as in the {B}as {C}ongo {P}rovince of the {D}emocratic {R}epublic of {C}ongo. {H}owever, little is known on the structure of its populations. {W}e investigated {G}. p. palpalis population genetic structure in five sleeping sickness foci (four in {C}ameroon, one in {D}emocratic {R}epublic of {C}ongo) using eight microsatellite {DNA} markers. {R}esults: {A} strong isolation by distance explains most of the population structure observed in our sampling sites of {C}ameroon and {DRC}. {T}he populations here are composed of panmictic subpopulations occupying fairly wide zones with a very strong isolation by distance. {E}ffective population sizes are probably between 20 and 300 individuals and if we assume densities between 120 and 2000 individuals per km(2), dispersal distance between reproducing adults and their parents extends between 60 and 300 meters. {C}onclusions: {T}his first investigation of population genetic structure of {G}. p. palpalis in {C}entral {A}frica has evidenced random mating subpopulations over fairly large areas and is thus at variance with that found in {W}est {A}frican populations of {G}. p. palpalis. {T}his study brings new information on the isolation by distance at a macrogeographic scale which in turn brings useful information on how to organise regional tsetse control. {F}uture investigations should be directed at temporal sampling to have more accurate measures of demographic parameters in order to help vector control decision.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}arasites and {V}ectors}, volume = {4}, numero = {}, pages = {140}, ISSN = {1756-3305}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1186/1756-3305-4-140}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053806}, }
