@article{fdi:010053777, title = {{G}6{PD} {A}-variant influences the antibody responses to {P}lasmodium falciparum {MSP}2}, author = {{C}ourtin, {D}avid and {M}ilet, {J}acqueline and {B}ertin, {G}wladys and {V}afa, {M}. and {S}arr, {J}ean {B}irame and {W}atier, {L}. and {D}eloron, {P}hilippe and {T}roye-{B}lomberg, {M}. and {G}arcia, {A}ndr{\'e} and {M}igot {N}abias, {F}lorence}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}igh antibody levels directed to {P}lasmodium falciparum merozoite surface proteins ({MSP}), including {MSP}2, as well as genetically related red blood cell defects, have previously been found to be associated with protection against malaria. {H}ere, our main objective was to study the changes in {MSP}2-specific total {I}g{G}, {I}g{G}1 and {I}g{G}3 responses during a malaria transmission season in order to assess the impact of sickle-cell, alpha(+)-thalassemia and {G}6{PD} variants on antibody kinetics. {R}epeated parasitological assessments of a cohort of children were conducted during an 8-month period. {A}ntibody responses to recombinant {MSP}2/3{D}7 and {MSP}2/{FC}27 proteins were measured at the beginning and at the end of transmission season. {W}e found that (i) the period of last {P}lasmodium falciparum infection during the transmission season was associated with {I}g{G}3 anti-{MSP}2 change. {C}ompared to the {I}g{G}3 levels of children infected in {J}anuary 2003 (end of transmission season), the {I}g{G}3 level of children decreased with the length of the period without infection, (ii) {G}6{PD} {A} carriers had a lower increase of {I}g{G}3 levels to {MSP}2/{FC}27 and {MSP}2/3{D}7 during the transmission season than the noncarriers. {T}his latter finding is suggestive of qualitative and/or quantitative reduction of exposure to malarial antigens related to this genetic variant, leading to weaker stimulation of specific antibody responses. {W}e speculate that cellmediated immune activity may explain the clinical protection afforded by this genetic trait.}, keywords = {{P}lasmodium falciparum ; {M}alaria ; {MSP}2 ; {A}ntibody ; {S}ickle cell trait ; {H}b{AS} ; {G}6{PD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nfection {G}enetics and {E}volution}, volume = {11}, numero = {6}, pages = {1287--1292}, ISSN = {1567-1348}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1016/j.meegid.2011.04.016}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053777}, }
