@article{fdi:010053757, title = {{N}itrate fate in a {M}exican andosol : is it affected by preferential flow ?}, author = {{P}rado, {B}. and {D}uwig, {C}{\'e}line and {E}tchevers, {J}. and {G}audet, {J}.{P}. and {V}auclin, {M}}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}ndosols are the dominant soils in the {V}alle de {B}ravo basin, the origin of a significant amount of {M}exico {C}ity's drinking water. {T}he main land use is agriculture and most of the existing surface water bodies are eutrophic. {N}itrogen fertilizer is used extensively. {T}here have been very few studies on nitrate ({NO}3-) fate in this type of soil and region. {C}omprehensive laboratory studies were conducted to determine the fate of {NO}3- in an {A}ndosol profile from {V}alle de {B}ravo, in order to assess the risk of water resources contamination. {N}itrate retention was analysed statically (using batch experiments) and dynamically (using intact and packed soil columns) at different soil depths and its competition with {C}l- was evaluated. {C}omplementary laboratory experiments were conducted to study water transport through the columns and nitrogen transformations in the soil. {I}n batch and columns, {NO}3- adsorption was linear in the range of concentrations studied and higher in the deepest soil layer. {P}referential flow pathways were found in the unaltered deeper soil layers, while tillage activity in the top layer destroyed the pore continuity. {I}n spite of the deeper soil layer's greater capacity for {NO}3- retention, the presence of preferential flow pathways coupled with high rainfall intensities, makes the {NO}3- mobile below the root zone at 1 m depth and increases the risk of groundwater contamination. {T}he results illustrate the complexity of nitrate fate in {A}ndosols and can be used to improve agricultural practices in the central {M}exico region.}, keywords = {{A}nion adsorption ; {P}hysical non-equilibrium ; {V}ariable charge soil ; {I}sotopic tracer}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}gricultural {W}ater {M}anagement}, volume = {98}, numero = {9}, pages = {1441--1450}, ISSN = {0378-3774}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1016/j.agwat.2011.04.013}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053757}, }
