@article{fdi:010053716, title = {{P}alaeotsunamis in the {P}acific {I}slands}, author = {{G}off, {J}. and {C}hagu{\'e}-{G}off, {C}. and {D}ominey-{H}owes, {D}. and {M}c{A}doo, {B}. and {C}ronin, {S}. and {B}ont{\'e}-{G}rapetin, {M}. and {N}ichol, {S}. and {H}orrocks, {M}. and {C}isternas, {M}. and {L}amarche, {G}. and {P}elletier, {B}ernard and {J}affe, {B}. and {D}udley, {W}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he recent 29 {S}eptember 2009 {S}outh {P}acific and 27 {F}ebruary 2010 {C}hilean events are a graphic reminder that the tsunami hazard and risk for the {P}acific {O}cean region should not be forgotten. {P}acific {I}slands {C}ountries ({PIC}s) generally have short ( < 150 years) historic records, which means that to understand their tsunami hazard and risk researchers must study evidence for prehistoric events. {H}owever, our current state of knowledge of palaeotsunamis in {PIC}s as opposed to their circum-{P}acific counterparts is minimal at best. {W}e briefly outline the limited extent of our current knowledge and propose an innovative methodology for future research in the {P}acific. {E}ach {PLC} represents a point source of information in the {P}acific {O}cean and this would allow their palaeotsunami records to be treated akin to palaeo-{DART} ({R}) ({D}eep-ocean {A}ssessment and {R}eporting of {T}sunamis) buoys. {C}ontemporaneous palaeotsunamis from local, regional and distant sources could be identified by using the spatial distribution of island records throughout the {P}acific {O}cean in conjunction with robust event chronologies. {T}his would be highly innovative and, more importantly, would help provide the building blocks necessary to achieve more meaningful disaster risk reduction for {PIC}s.}, keywords = {{P}acific {I}sland {C}ountries ; {P}alaeotsunami ; sources ; risk}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}arth-{S}cience {R}eviews}, volume = {107}, numero = {1-2}, pages = {141--146}, ISSN = {0012-8252}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1016/j.earscirev.2010.10.005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053716}, }
