@article{fdi:010053679, title = {{A}nalysis of {T}erra{SAR}-{X} data sensitivity to bare soil moisture, roughness, composition and soil crust}, author = {{A}ubert, {M}. and {B}aghdadi, {N}. and {Z}ribi, {M}ehrez and {D}ouaoui, {A}. and {L}oumagne, {C}. and {B}aup, {F}. and {E}l {H}ajj, {M}. and {G}arrigues, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}oils play a key role in shaping the environment and in risk assessment. {W}e characterized the soils of bare agricultural plots using {T}erra{SAR}-{X} (9.5 {GH}z) data acquired in 2009 and 2010. {W}e analyzed the behavior of the {T}erra{SAR}-{X} signal for two configurations, {HH}-25 degrees and {HH}-50 degrees, with regard to several soil conditions: moisture content, surface roughness, soil composition and soil-surface structure (slaking crust). {T}he {T}erra{SAR}-{X} signal was more sensitive to soil moisture at a low (25 degrees) incidence angle than at a high incidence angle (50 degrees). {F}or high soil moisture (>25%), the {T}erra{SAR}-{X} signal was more sensitive to soil roughness at a high incidence angle (50 degrees) than at a low incidence angle (25 degrees). {T}he high spatial resolution of the {T}erra{SAR}-{X} data (1 m) enabled the soil composition and slaking crust to be analyzed at the within-plot scale based on the radar signal. {T}he two loamy-soil categories that composed our training plots did not differ sufficiently in their percentages of sand and clay to be discriminated by the {X}-band radar signal. {H}owever, the spatial distribution of slaking crust could be detected when soil moisture variation is observed between soil crusted and soil without crust. {I}ndeed, areas covered by slaking crust could have greater soil moisture and consequently a greater backscattering signal than soils without crust.}, keywords = {{S}oil moisture ; {R}oughness ; {S}oil composition ; {S}laking crust ; {X}-band ; {T}erra{SAR}-{X} images ; {W}ithin field plot scale}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}emote {S}ensing of {E}nvironment}, volume = {115}, numero = {8}, pages = {1801--1810}, ISSN = {0034-4257}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1016/j.rse.2011.02.021}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053679}, }
