@article{fdi:010053571, title = {{W}estern {E}uropean climate, and {P}inot noir grape harvest dates in {B}urgundy, {F}rance, since the 17th century}, author = {{T}ourre, {Y}. {M}. and {R}ousseau, {D}. and {J}arlan, {L}ionel and {L}adurie, {E}. {L}. and {D}aux, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}ime-series of growing season air temperature anomalies in the {P}arisian region and of {P}inot noir grape harvest dates ({GHD}) in {B}urgundy (1676-2004) are analyzed in the frequency domain. {V}ariability of both time-series display 3 significant frequency-bands (peaks significant at the 5% level): (1) a low-frequency-band (multi-decadal) with a 25 yr peak period, (2) a 3 to 8 yr band period (inter-annual) with a 3.1 yr peak period, and (3) a 2 to 3 yr band period (quasi-biennial) with a 2.4 yr peak period. {J}oint sea surface temperature/sea level pressure ({SST}/{SLP}) {EOF} analyses based on data from the 20th century along with spatio-temporal patterns for the above frequency-bands, are presented. {SST} anomalies were found to display early significant spatial {SST} patterns in the north {A}tlantic ocean (air temperature lagging by 6 mo) similar to those obtained from {EOF} analyses. {I}t is proposed that the robust power spectra for the above frequency-bands are linked with {A}tlantic climate variability modulating western {E}uropean climate: (1) the global {M}ulti-{D}ecadal {O}scillation ({MDO}) with its {A}tlantic {M}ulti-decadal {O}scillation ({AMO}) footprint, (2) the {A}tlantic {I}nter-{A}nnual ({IA}) fluctuations, and (3) the {A}tlantic {Q}uasi-{B}iennial ({QB}) fluctuations. {M}oreover these specific western {E}uropean climate signals are perceived as contributors to the timing of {GHD} in {B}urgundy. {T}hus, advance knowledge on the evolution and phasing of the above climate fluctuations become important elements for viticulture and wine industry management, since anthropogenic effects could have modified time-series patterns, particularly since the mid-1980s.}, keywords = {{W}estern {E}uropean climate variability ; {C}limate change ; {G}rape harvest ; dates ; {P}inot noir ; {B}urgundy ; {GHD} ; {FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {R}esearch}, volume = {46}, numero = {3}, pages = {243--253}, ISSN = {0936-577{X}}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.3354/cr00991}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053571}, }
