@article{fdi:010053475, title = {{D}etection and genetic characterization of enteroviruses circulating among wild populations of chimpanzees in {C}ameroon : relationship with human and simian enteroviruses}, author = {{H}arvala, {H}. and {S}harp, {C}. {P}. and {N}gole, {E}. {M}. and {D}elaporte, {E}ric and {P}eeters, {M}artine and {S}immonds, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}nteroviruses ({EV}s), members of the family {P}icornaviridae, are a genetically and antigenically diverse range of viruses causing acute infections in humans and several {O}ld {W}orld monkey ({OWM}) species. {D}espite their known wide distribution in primates, nothing is currently known about the occurrence, frequency, and genetic diversity of enteroviruses infecting apes. {T}o investigate this, 27 chimpanzee and 27 gorilla fecal samples collected from undisturbed jungle areas with minimal human contact in {C}ameroon were screened for {EV}s. {F}our chimpanzee samples were positive, but none of the gorilla samples were positive. {G}enetic characterization of the {VP}1, {VP}4, and partial {VP}2 genes, the 5' untranslated region, and partial 3{D}pol sequences enabled chimpanzee-derived {EV}s to be identified as (i) the species {A} type, {EV}76, (ii) a new species {D} type assigned as {EV}111, along with a human isolate from the {D}emocratic {R}epublic of {C}ongo previously described by the {I}nternational {C}ommittee on the {T}axonomy of {V}iruses, and (iii) a new species {B} type (assigned as {EV}110) most closely related to, although a distinct type from, the {SA}5 isolate recovered from a vervet monkey. {T}he identification of {EV}s infecting chimpanzees related to those circulating in human and {OWM} populations provides evidence for cross-species transmission of {EV}s between primates. {H}owever, the direction of transfer and the existence of primate sources of zoonotic enterovirus infections in humans require further investigation of population exposure and more extensive characterization of {EV}s circulating in wild ape populations.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {V}irology}, volume = {85}, numero = {9}, pages = {4480--4486}, ISSN = {0022-538{X}}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1128/jvi.02285-10}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053475}, }
