@article{fdi:010053451, title = {{S}tatistical downscaling of sea-surface wind over the {P}eru-{C}hile upwelling region : diagnosing the impact of climate change from the {IPSL}-{CM}4 model}, author = {{G}oubanova, {K}. and {E}chevin, {V}incent and {D}ewitte, {B}oris and {C}odron, {F}. and {T}akahashi, {K}. and {T}erray, {P}ascal and {V}rac, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he key aspect of the ocean circulation off {P}eru-{C}hile is the wind-driven upwelling of deep, cold, nutrient-rich waters that promote a rich marine ecosystem. {I}t has been suggested that global warming may be associated with an intensification of upwelling-favorable winds. {H}owever, the lack of high-resolution long-term observations has been a limitation for a quantitative analysis of this process. {I}n this study, we use a statistical downscaling method to assess the regional impact of climate change on the sea-surface wind over the {P}eru-{C}hile upwelling region as simulated by the global coupled general circulation model {IPSL}-{CM}4. {T}aking advantage of the high-resolution {Q}uik{SCAT} wind product and of the {NCEP} reanalysis data, a statistical model based on multiple linear regressions is built for the daily mean meridional and zonal wind at 10 m for the period 2000-2008. {T}he large-scale 10 m wind components and sea level pressure are used as regional circulation predictors. {T}he skill of the downscaling method is assessed by comparing with the surface wind derived from the {ERS} satellite measurements, with in situ wind observations collected by {ICOADS} and through cross-validation. {I}t is then applied to the outputs of the {IPSL}-{CM}4 model over stabilized periods of the pre-industrial, 2 x {CO}2 and 4 x {CO}2 {IPCC} climate scenarios. {T}he results indicate that surface along-shore winds off central {C}hile (off central {P}eru) experience a significant intensification (weakening) during {A}ustral winter (summer) in warmer climates. {T}his is associated with a general decrease in intra-seasonal variability.}, keywords = {{S}tatistical downscaling ; {C}oastal wind ; {U}pwelling ; {P}eru ; {C}hile ; {C}limate change}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {D}ynamics}, volume = {36}, numero = {7-8}, pages = {1365--1378}, ISSN = {0930-7575}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1007/s00382-010-0824-0}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053451}, }
