@article{fdi:010053405, title = {{B}ycatch of the {E}uropean purse seine tuna fishery in the {A}tlantic {O}cean for the 2003-2007 period}, author = {{A}mand{\'e}, {M}onin and {A}riz, {J}. and {C}hassot, {E}mmanuel and de {M}olina, {A}. {D}. and {G}aertner, {D}aniel and {M}urua, {H}. and {P}ianet, {R}enaud and {R}uiz, {J}. and {C}havance, {P}ierre}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ycatch of several groups of species and their characteristics are presented for the period 2003 to 2007 for the {E}uropean purse seine tuna fishery operating in the {A}tlantic {O}cean. {D}ata were collected through {F}rench and {S}panish observer programmes and represented a total of 27 trips corresponding to 2.9% coverage. {B}ycatch is defined as non-targeted species and small or damaged target species. {B}ycatch species composition, main species length, sex ratio and the fate of the most common species are presented first. {S}tratified ratios relative to landings of major commercial tunas were then used to estimate the total bycatch; these ratios were considered the most appropriate variable for extrapolation. {S}tratification was based on the fishing mode (free school vs. floating object), season (quarters) and spatial areas. {T}he annual average bycatch was estimated at about 6400 t, corresponding to a mean annual value of 80.8 t per 1000 t of tuna landed or 7.5% of the total catch. {T}unas represent 83% (67.2 t/1000 t) of the total bycatch, followed by other bony fishes (10%, 7.8 t/1000 t), billfishes (5%, 4.0 t/1000 t), sharks (1%, 0.9 t/1000 t) and rays (1%, 0.9 t/1000 t). {B}ased on estimates of the annual bycatch, 16% was kept on board and sold in local markets.}, keywords = {{B}ycatch ; {D}iscards ; {T}una fisheries ; {P}urse seining ; {A}tlantic {O}cean}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}quatic {L}iving {R}esources}, volume = {23}, numero = {4}, pages = {353--362}, ISSN = {0990-7440}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1051/alr/2011003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053405}, }
